Can my weight affect my fertility?

Excess weight has been linked to fertility problems in both men and women.

In women, being overweight can cause a hormonal imbalance, which can then lead to impaired regulation of menstrual cycles and sex hormones. Studies have revealed that women who are obese were less likely to conceive within one year than women with a normal BMI.

Obesity has also been linked to lower sperm concentration in men undergoing fertility treatment, lower testosterone levels and erectile dysfunction. According to Medicine Today, carrying an extra 10kg can reduce a male’s fertility by 10 percent.
