Ovidrel Instructions

The following information is a general guide only. Please follow specific dose and usage instructions from Fertility First nursing staff at the time of treatment. Ovidrel is used a trigger injection in a number of cycles. The Ovidrel pen should be stored in the refrigerator between 2°C and 8° DO NOT store in the freezer. Do not use Ovidrel after the expiry date.

Step 1: Administration

Wash and dry your hands thoroughly Remove the seal from a new single-use needle. Screw the needle onto the pen until firmly fixed. Carefully remove the outer needle cap and keep it for after your injection.

Step 2: Dose setting

Turn the dose setting knob clockwise until you can read the number 250 in the dosage window. DO NOT push or pull the dose setting knob while you turn it.

Step 3: Injection

Ovidrel is given as a subcutaneous injection (under your skin) in the lower abdominal area or thigh. Clean the injection area with an alcohol swab. Remove the inner cap of the needle. Pinch a fold of skin between your thumb and forefinger and insert the needle fully at a 90° angle Keep holding the pinch as you slowly inject by pushing the dosage knob in. Keep pushing on the knob until the dosage indicator has gone back to the zero mark (“0”). Keep the needle in the skin for 10 seconds after injecting then withdraw the needle. Carefully put the outer needle cap back onto the needle and unscrew the used needle by turning anticlockwise. Dispose of your needle into your sharps container. Put the pen back into the refrigerator to reuse the next day (unless the pen is empty) Carefully put the outer needle cap back onto the needle and unscrew the used needle by turning anticlockwise. Dispose of your needle into your sharps container. Recap the Pen and place it into your general waste bin. Common questions: Q: What should I do if there is a large bubble in the solution? A: If you see a large bubble, you will need to remove it. This is done by turning the dose setting knob clockwise until you see a dot (·) in the dose display window. Remove the inner needle cap and hold the Pen with the needle pointing upwards. Tap the pen gently so the bubble rises toward the needle and slowly press the dose setting knob as far as it will go. A drop of liquid at the end of your needle indicates that your Pen is ready for use. If you do not see any liquid this process can be repeated once. Please be advised that when in doubt or if you have any questions or concerns, it is always best to contact the Nurses at the clinic and speak to them directly. Please note that the after-hours number is strictly reserved for emergencies only.
