Research presented by scientists at Southampton General Hospital in the United Kingdom has shown a significant association between the developing preimplantation embryo and maternal diet.
Previous research has shown that poor maternal diet at the time of conception in mice models can have long-term detrimental effects on the future offspring, effects that range from cardiometabolic to neurological diseases.
The results of the study have indicated that embryonic tissue will actually change its pattern of development in response to diet. The rodent models used in these studies have provided evidence that supports the theory that the developmental disorders of adults can be traced back to maternal-embryonic interactions prior to implantation such as diet.
