Fertility costs can be complex. What you pay depends on the treatment you need, your Medicare rebates, your private health cover and where you are in the calendar year.
Every fertility journey is different, so not everyone will need every step below. Your Fertility Specialist will give you a personalised estimate after your first consultation.
Call one of our patient enquiry team members to understand more about costs ahead of your first consultation, or before you choose your clinic.
Fertility care happens in stages, from preconception health through to testing, treatment and egg or embryo freezing. Not all intending parents will need to go through every stage. Select a stage to see estimated out-of-pocket costs, the Medicare items that apply, and what is and isn’t included.
| Stage | Who it’s for | What’s involved |
|---|---|---|
| 01. Preconception health | Anyone planning a pregnancy | Fertility assessment, first consultation and ovulation tracking |
| 02. Fertility testing | Anyone wanting to understand their fertility | Tests based on your Fertility Specialist’s recommendation |
| 03. Fertility treatment | Anyone who needs a little extra help – your path may be simpler than you think, many people don’t need IVF | Ovulation induction (OI), intra-uterine insemination (IUI), in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), frozen embryo transfer (FET) and donor cycles |
| 04. Freezing and storage | Those preserving fertility or storing embryos | Egg, sperm and embryo freezing and storage |
A fertility assessment gives you and your Fertility Specialist a clear picture of your baseline fertility health, so you only go on to the tests and treatment you need.
At Fertility First, we start with a comprehensive fertility assessment and work on optimising your natural fertility.

*Out-of-pocket estimates are shown separately for your first cycle and subsequent cycles in the same calendar year, as the Extended Medicare Safety Net (EMSN) usually increases your Medicare rebate once your out-of-pocket costs for the year reach the threshold ($2,699.10 in 2026). Estimates assume you have Medicare and private health insurance. Not all services attract a Medicare rebate, and your final costs will depend on your individual circumstances.
†Total upfront cost is the gap you pay at the time of treatment, after your Medicare (MBS) rebate and before any Extended Medicare Safety Net rebate is paid back to you.
Cycle fees are not inclusive of day hospital procedure fees, specialist consultations or any medication you may require. Day surgery is subject to your level of health cover. Our administration team can give you details of your specific treatment fees and take you through our financial consent forms before you start treatment.
Fees current as of 12 October 2026. Prices are a guide only and subject to change.
Fertility clinics often set out their pricing in different ways. These questions will help you understand your total out-of-pocket cost for your personalised treatment. If you have any questions, call us on 02 9586 3311.
Total upfront cost
The gap you pay at the time of treatment, after your Medicare rebate and before any Extended Medicare Safety Net rebate is paid back to you.
Once you reach a certain amount of medical expenses in a calendar year, the Medicare Safety Net may provide higher rebates, meaning you pay less. The Medicare Safety Net threshold for 2026 is $2,699.10. This is why later cycles in the same calendar year often cost less.
For any questions about whether you have reached your Medicare Safety Net and are eligible for further rebates, please contact Medicare on 132 011.
The Medicare Benefits Schedule lists the value of each medical service as defined by the Australian Government. The Medicare rebate is the proportion of the fee paid by Medicare on your behalf. This is usually 85% of the scheduled fee for outpatient services, and 75% for inpatient services.
To claim your full entitlements from Medicare you must have a current referral, which allows you to claim on your consultations and treatment cycles.
Medicare has been unable to keep up with the rising costs of medical services across all fields, including reproductive medicine. To continue providing sustainable, high-quality fertility care, we sometimes need to charge above the Medicare Benefits Schedule, resulting in the out-of-pocket costs estimated above.
The Medicare system can be confusing to navigate. If you have specific questions about the costs of your fertility treatment, we encourage you to talk to us or visit Medicare.
If you’re admitted to a day hospital for a procedure such as egg collection or a laparoscopy, private hospital cover that includes assisted reproductive services can help with two parts of the cost:
Private health insurance doesn’t cover your IVF cycle fee, monitoring or consultations. These are out-of-hospital services covered by Medicare rebates instead.
Before starting treatment, call your health fund and ask about item numbers 13212 (egg collection) and 13215 (embryo transfer). Check whether you’ve served your waiting period, usually 12 months, and whether you have an excess.
Most fertility medications are subsidised under the PBS, so you’ll pay the standard PBS price at the pharmacy. Some extras policies offer a small benefit for medications not on the PBS, so it’s worth asking your fund.
