Understanding your fertility costs

Fertility costs can be complex. What you pay depends on the treatment you need, your Medicare rebates, your private health cover and where you are in the calendar year.

Every fertility journey is different, so not everyone will need every step below. Your Fertility Specialist will give you a personalised estimate after your first consultation.

Call one of our patient enquiry team members to understand more about costs ahead of your first consultation, or before you choose your clinic.

Costs at each stage

Fertility care happens in stages, from preconception health through to testing, treatment and egg or embryo freezing. Not all intending parents will need to go through every stage. Select a stage to see estimated out-of-pocket costs, the Medicare items that apply, and what is and isn’t included.

How your health cover changes these costs

*Out-of-pocket estimates are shown separately for your first cycle and subsequent cycles in the same calendar year, as the Extended Medicare Safety Net (EMSN) usually increases your Medicare rebate once your out-of-pocket costs for the year reach the threshold ($2,699.10 in 2026). Estimates assume you have Medicare and private health insurance. Not all services attract a Medicare rebate, and your final costs will depend on your individual circumstances.

†Total upfront cost is the gap you pay at the time of treatment, after your Medicare (MBS) rebate and before any Extended Medicare Safety Net rebate is paid back to you.

Cycle fees are not inclusive of day hospital procedure fees, specialist consultations or any medication you may require. Day surgery is subject to your level of health cover. Our administration team can give you details of your specific treatment fees and take you through our financial consent forms before you start treatment.

Fees current as of 12 October 2026. Prices are a guide only and subject to change.

Questions to ask any clinic about costs

Fertility clinics often set out their pricing in different ways. These questions will help you understand your total out-of-pocket cost for your personalised treatment. If you have any questions, call us on 02 9586 3311.

  1. What does the cycle fee include, and what is charged separately?
  2. How much will I pay upfront, and how much will I get back from Medicare?
  3. Are day hospital and anaesthetist fees included in my fees? If not, how much can I expect to pay and when?
  4. Are egg collections and embryo transfers done as inpatient procedures, and what rebate can I expect if I need IVF?
  5. What do medications usually cost for my treatment?
  6. What does it cost to freeze and store embryos, and to have a frozen embryo transfer later?
  7. Are extras like ICSI or genetic testing charged on top?
  8. Are there discounts or programs if I need more than one IVF cycle?

Medicare and fertility treatments

How Medicare and rebates apply in ART

Key cost terms, explained

Total upfront cost
The gap you pay at the time of treatment, after your Medicare rebate and before any Extended Medicare Safety Net rebate is paid back to you.

Cycle payment
The full fee for a treatment cycle, paid before your cycle starts. Day hospital fees aren’t included. You pay these to the hospital on the day of your procedure, and if you’re insured, only your excess or gap.

Out of pocket
What you pay after your Medicare rebate has been claimed.
Additional feesCosts billed separately, such as day hospital, anaesthetist, consultations and medications. See other fees

MBS item number
The number Medicare uses to identify each service and its rebate. You’ll find it under each test and treatment above.
Medicare Safety Net

Once you reach a certain amount of medical expenses in a calendar year, the Medicare Safety Net may provide higher rebates, meaning you pay less. The Medicare Safety Net threshold for 2026 is $2,699.10. This is why later cycles in the same calendar year often cost less.

For any questions about whether you have reached your Medicare Safety Net and are eligible for further rebates, please contact Medicare on 132 011.

Medicare rebates

The Medicare Benefits Schedule lists the value of each medical service as defined by the Australian Government. The Medicare rebate is the proportion of the fee paid by Medicare on your behalf. This is usually 85% of the scheduled fee for outpatient services, and 75% for inpatient services.

To claim your full entitlements from Medicare you must have a current referral, which allows you to claim on your consultations and treatment cycles.

Gap fees and out-of-pocket expenses

Medicare has been unable to keep up with the rising costs of medical services across all fields, including reproductive medicine. To continue providing sustainable, high-quality fertility care, we sometimes need to charge above the Medicare Benefits Schedule, resulting in the out-of-pocket costs estimated above.

The Medicare system can be confusing to navigate. If you have specific questions about the costs of your fertility treatment, we encourage you to talk to us or visit Medicare.

Private health insurance and fertility treatment

If you’re admitted to a day hospital for a procedure such as egg collection or a laparoscopy, private hospital cover that includes assisted reproductive services can help with two parts of the cost:

  • Hospital fees: theatre, nursing staff, equipment and use of the bed. If your fund has an agreement with the hospital, the hospital usually bills your fund directly, and you only pay your excess and any gap.
  • Doctors’ fees: the surgeon and anaesthetist. Medicare pays 75% of the scheduled fee, and your fund pays the remaining 25%. If your doctor charges more than the scheduled fee, you may pay a gap, unless they use your fund’s gap scheme.

Private health insurance doesn’t cover your IVF cycle fee, monitoring or consultations. These are out-of-hospital services covered by Medicare rebates instead.

Before starting treatment, call your health fund and ask about item numbers 13212 (egg collection) and 13215 (embryo transfer). Check whether you’ve served your waiting period, usually 12 months, and whether you have an excess.

Most fertility medications are subsidised under the PBS, so you’ll pay the standard PBS price at the pharmacy. Some extras policies offer a small benefit for medications not on the PBS, so it’s worth asking your fund.

NSW Government fertility rebates

Fertility First is an eligible provider for the NSW Government’s Affordable IVF Initiative, so if you live in NSW you may be able to claim:

  • Pre-IVF fertility testing rebate: up to $250 towards your out-of-pocket costs for eligible tests, such as an ovulation test, pelvic ultrasound or semen analysis.
  • Fertility treatment rebate: up to $2,000 towards your out-of-pocket costs for treatment such as IVF or IUI, if your household receives Family Tax Benefit, holds a Health Care Card or has a household income of $116,000 or less. You need to apply within 90 days of treatment.

Our team can complete the declaration form you need, then you apply online through Service NSW.
